Astral.Camp Content Policy

The Astral Campgrounds and the Astral.Camp Mastodon server are inclusive spaces which foster empathy, community, and collaboration. Our goal is to create a space for people to feel comfortable calling “home” online, while ensuring that personal expression is celebrated without creating a safe space for hate.

This document serves as a reference for acceptable content as well as moderation protocols on Astral.Camp.

Baseline

The Astral.Camp server (and all Astral Campgrounds properties) has a zero tolerance policy for the following:

  • Hate speech
  • Bigotry
  • Queerphobia/Transphobia
  • Intentional dissemination of disinformation
  • Spam (not the food though, it makes for great musubi)
  • Harassment of other members or other servers

Instances of these behaviors will result in an immediate and permanent ban.

Sensitive Media Restrictions

Posted media (video, audio, images, etc) may never include the following content:

  • Sexually explicit material
  • Extreme violence / realistic depictions of grotesque imagery
  • Child exploitation material
  • Racist depictions of other humans

Media with the following content must be behind a content warning:

  • Violence
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Insects
  • Sexually suggestive material
  • Weapons

Content Warnings

Content warnings outside of those stated in this content policy are up to the discretion of the poster.

The Astral.Camp staff encourage the use of content warnings for difficult topics such as touchy political statements or difficult personal stories. While these topics may be uncomfortable for others, they are also a deeply human, shared experience. We feel that the trust should be placed in the poster to determine when a content warning is necessary on these topics.

Here is a list of common content warnings encouraged by Astral.Camp staff:

  • politics or country-specific tags such as uspol
  • self harm mention
  • mental health
  • grief

Alt Text

Accessibility is table stakes. Images included in posts should be given alt text describing the content of the image. Videos without sound or captions should also be given alt text. If a video has sound and captions, alt text is encouraged but not required.

Language

Astral.Camp is an English speaking server. Users of Astral.Camp are expected to primarily use English in their posts, but are not limited to only using English.

Artificial Intelligence

Astral.Camp does not allow derivative/generative AI output in posts. Do not share AI-generated imagery or text in posts on Astral.Camp.

Astral.Camp does not permit AI from reading or training on posts. While we cannot ensure this won’t happen due to AI companies not really following the rules, it is explicitly against our policy.

Moderation Process

If a user is reported and found to be breaking the content policy, we will issue the following responses as needed:

  • Direct warning / post removal — small offenses, mistakes, and first offenses
  • Temporary ban — more significant offenses from members in good standing otherwise
  • Permanent ban — breaking a zero tolerance rule or repeat offenses

Appeals

If you have been banned from Astral.Camp and would like to appeal your ban, fill out the form at https://trail.as/appeal and the Astral.Camp staff will review your ban. Appeal decisions are final.

Defederation

Astral.Camp immediately defederates upon discovering instances with the following behavior or content:

  • Nazi/Bigot havens
  • Spam
  • Harassment
  • Child exploitation material

We may defederate from other servers to protect our community as we see fit. We do not publish a list of our defederated servers at this time.
