The Firewatch is a community volunteer moderator position in the Astral Campgrounds. Firewatch members are upstanding members of the community whose primary goal is to keep things safe, help orient new members, and interface with staff to escalate problems quickly.

Please note that this is a opt-in volunteer role and not something everyone should assume they must eventually do.

Members of the Firewatch are listed in a separate group in the online list on Discord, and have orange names in chat.

How Do I Apply?

All Campers who meet the following prerequisites are welcome to apply to join the Firewatch:

  • Be a member of the community for at least 100 Continuous Days
  • No moderation strikes for the last 50 Days
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Understanding that not everyone who applies will be added to the Firewatch

If you meet these requirements, submit your application by using the following command: /firewatch join

Your submission will then be reviewed by staff. In the case your request is denied, you will be notified privately by Staff explaining why. If denied, you may apply again after three months if you are still interested.

Once you are approved to join the Firewatch, you will receive the “Firewatch” role. This includes a unique color for your name along with a separate category in the active user list. Additionally, Firewatch members have access to a private channel to interface with Camp Counselors.

Expectations

As a Firewatch member, you are expected to remain an upstanding member of the community. What follows briefly outlines areas of focus for Firewatch members.

Welcome and Guide New Campers

Campers already have a storied history welcoming in new campers as they landed in the now archived #new-arrivals. As services have continued to grow and skills in the Camp Game expand, it’s easy for newcomers to get overwhelmed in the expanding depths of the Astral Realm. In addition to directing new Campers to spaces like #orientation-room, Firewatch also sets an example for guiding Campers through the ins and outs of the Discord server and the variety of services available throughout the Realm.

Demonstrate the Standards of Excellence

*See also Camp Standard of Excellence

Members of Firewatch have been a part of the community long enough to know what the general Vibe of the server and various services are. Firewatch is responsible for keeping a watchful eye for Campers who may be bringing down the Vibe.

Most issues avoid escalation with compassion and a gentle “nudge” as a reminder. If things escalate or become repeating habits, Counselors can step in as needed.

If you have already been a member of the community for awhile, it is advised to refresh yourself on documents in the #orientation-room and the Standards of Excellence.

Report on Vibe Levels

A private channel has been established for Firewatch members to directly interface with Counselors as a means of keeping a close eye on the state of the Vibes. The aim is for everyone to work together as this community exapnds by making sure all voices are being heard. So report on any questions, concerns or behaviors occurring around Camp. Equally important is collecting feedback about Camp Services as they are rolled out and tweaked.

Continue Being Awesome

It is amazing to see people from all over and all walks of life coming together to create a space for each other that we can all safely Vibe in. A big thank you to anyone who takes the time to help Make Sure things continue that way, whether members of Firewatch or not.
